This accession consists of correspondence, memoranda, proposals and other records of the Office of the Deputy Director. The records primarily document campus and marine facilities, research programs, committees, ship operations, personnel, finances and other matters concerning the administration of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The files in this accession consist largely of records collected and generated by Jeffery Dean Frautschy, who served as SIO Assistant Director from 1958 to 1980 and SIO Deputy Director from 1980 until his retirement in 1982. The files also include records of Charles J. Merdinger, who served as Deputy Director from 1974 to 1980, and Justin Langille who served as Deputy Director from 1982 to 1987. The records of this accession include documentation of the design and construction of SIO buildings and facilities, including the George H. Scripps Memorial Marine Laboratory building renovation, the acquisitions and management of property including the Kendall-Frost Marsh Preserve in Mission Bay. The files include material documenting SIO relations with local and state government, including advisory committees and groups interested in water quality, coastal zone management, sewage treatment and other environmental issues.
